Transport Economist
I am Jedd Ugay, a transport economist, but first and foremost, I am a commuter and bicyclist who has been struggling with daily commutes ever since I can remember.
I am passionate about improving our transport systems because I believe that improving mobility in both urban and rural contexts will help reduce poverty, propel economic growth, and lower inequality. This is how I want to contribute to nation-building and to improving our quality of life. After all, Filipinos deserve better.
My vision of “world-class” transport is succinctly illustrated by Enrique Peñalosa: “An advanced city is not one where the poor use cars, but rather one where even the rich use public transport or bicycles."
We are all dependent on and affected by our transport system, as its impacts cut across sectors and economic classes. Since transport planning is multidisciplinary (it touches on engineering, social, political, economic, environmental, etc.), we all have our own ways to contribute to realizing a system that is more inclusive, efficient, and sustainable. It all starts with unifying our voices in pushing for a better transport system that works for all.
