Persons with Disabilities

I always look at the brighter side of life. In every challenge, I see an opportunity. In every trial and hurdle, I try to be optimistic. But as a person with disability, the struggle of daily living is somewhat high because of the barriers I encounter. The stigma and discrimination are still there. Looking at the crowded, unsafe, inaccessible streets and sidewalks, elevated foot bridges, highways congested with private vehicles, rails always in need of repair, inaccessible public utility transportation, and not enough money in my pocket to ride a taxi or TNVS, I know I need to make a way to voice out my concerns and be heard as a commuter with disability.

Frustration sets in specifically during this “new normal” because of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. But I know this will not deter me from what I want with our sector, a disability inclusive society. I dream of going to work as a commuter using our accessible public transportation system. I dream that I am one with other people in enjoying the walk or ride safely in going to work or to access basic services independently wherein our rights are being respected, promoted, and protected. I dream that I can cross the street safely without any added burden to the government.

I want our government to implement accessibility in accordance with our laws because this is the right thing to do and for persons with disabilities to go out of their houses, be mobile and productive. I dream that our sector will feel that the government is truly taking its part in including us in all its plans, projects, and activities and NOT LEAVING US BEHIND. I want our government to hear our voice and see us as contributing members of the society. As the saying goes, “IT IS NOTHING ABOUT US, WITHOUT US.”

Being a disability-rights advocate and a member of the Move As One Coalition, I hope that my dreams and wants will become realities as I continue to advocate for the accessibility rights of persons with disabilities.
